Beginning in June, Tuesday & Thursdays at 8:00 a.m  Teaching Tai Chi and Qigong is Barbara Dennis.  Barbara has studied Tai Chi and Qigong since 2002 and is a senior student of the Stone River School of Tai Chi in Yellow Springs, Ohio.  She is of the linneage of Cheng Man-ch'ing who developed the Yang-style short form and brought this martial art from Taiwan to the United States in the mid-1960s.  Man-ch'ing's school of Tai Chi in New York City produced several senior students who continue to spread this popular style of martial art throughout the country.  Stone River School founder, Brad Fraley, studied with Benjamin Lo, senior student of Man-ch'ing.  Both Brad and Barbara have additionally studied with, amongst others, Man-ch'ing senior student Maggie Newman of Philadelphia.    Tai Chi is a complete system for personal development that functions as exercise, meditation, and martial art.  This ancient Chinese art of slow fluid movements conditions the body and deepens awareness by consciously using the mind, body and energy together.  Its unhurried movement and deep concentration create a state of relaxed alertness.    Tai Chi Chuan is an "internal" martial art system.  This means that body-awareness is more important than physical strength.  Tai Chi develops "internal" strength, without hardness or tension as the movements are soft, yet surprisingly strong and resilient.  The purpose of Qigong is to strengthen, balance and improve the flow of the vital energy of the body.  It is not a martial art and the slow movements are coordinated with the breath.  These gentle exercises generate restorative effects regardless of your level of physical ability.  Health benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong include assisting with many problems ranging from high blood pressure and arthritis to poor balance.  Both Qigong and Tai Chi have been found to improve emotional health and strengthen the immune system.

Tuesday & Thursdays at 9:15 a.m.  Basic Body Conditioning with Certified Personal Trainer Leva Bath.  Basic Body Conditioning is for beginners, deconditioned and active older adults.  This class emphasizes the basics, making it easy to follow and fun for all ages.  Basic Body Conditioning incorporates light strength training along with aerobic type exercises and is guaranteed to provide the participant with a safe and effective total body workout.  According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) the goals of an exercise program for older individuals are “maintenance of functional capacity for independent living, reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease, retardation of the progression of chronic diseases, promotion of psychological well being and provision of opportunities for social interaction.”

If you’re looking to lose weight, don’t forget about having a smoothie after your workout to use as a meal replacement.  Just a few times a week will help you in your efforts.  Our smoothies are low sugar and the average fruit smoothie is only about 200 calories with 23 grams of protein.  Consider having a smoothie for your dinner or lunch and see the results!!

 

Since moving GET FIT to the Samuel Walker’s Building over a year ago, it has continued to expand and flourish bringing all facets of exercise.  GET FIT has two complete weight rooms, one just for Personal Training and the other is for the membership’s use.  We also have a large group fitness room where we offer Zumba, Spinning, Kick-Boxing, Pilates, Yoga, The Drill, Circuit Training, and a new aerobics class, Turbo Kick.  Just finished is the Cardio Theater and Childcare.  If all that wasn’t enough, GET FIT also offers tanning, a massage therapist and we have a wonderful City Blends Smoothie Café.
